How Gene Antisense is Changing the World

Written By The Midland Certified Reagent Company

There have been so many medical breakthroughs in our lifetime that’s astounding to imagine what the world of science will find in just the next decade or so. One example of this is the science of DNA antisense.

Most people know that DNA consists of two strands. One is known as sense; the other is called antisense. It’s this second one that is actually the source of the code used for proteins.

Scientists have used this knowledge to make what are known as antisense oligonucleotides. And these special creations can actually be used to silence a gene’s expression. In laymen’s terms, this means it can make a gene as if it no longer existed in the body. Think about all the problems we link today to “bad genes.” Now imagine a scientific mechanism that could shut them up once and for all.

Although the discovery of this scientific breakthrough is over 40 years old, that hasn’t been enough time to really take advantage of it for all it’s worth. But each year we learn more and more about how this amazing discovery can be used to essentially “make” better humans or at least “improve” them.

It’s hard to know where the future of medicine will take us, but the use of DNA antisense could change the entire landscape. Instead of taking medication in the future, you might simply undergo gene therapy to stop the culprits!

The Midland Certified Reagent Company has been adding to the gains of modern science since 1978. Amongst other things, they have done tremendous work with both page purification and oligonucleotide synthesis.
